Gas may no longer be transition fuel

During a webinar hosted by Climate Spectator, energy experts stated that gas is longer tipped as the fuel to succeed coal in the National Electricity Market and WA.

The future of gas in Australia is dependent on Asia in several ways. The price of gas in Asia in pegged to the price of oil, meaning that it is priced higher in our neighbouring foreign markets than Australia. Efforts by Australian companies, as is called for in the Energy White Paper, to capitalize on these markets is likely to force up domestic prices. The increased profits from selling to Asian markets may see domestic markets dry up as consumers react to higher prices, as domestic prices move closer to international prices, and switch to other fuels.

Gas is said to remain as a supporting fuel to intermittent renewable sources of solar and wind
