Combet commits to second commitment period of Kyoto Protocol
Australia will continue its Kyoto Protocol engagement into the second commitment period. Climate Change Minister Greg Combet formally announced the decision during the Carbon Expo held in Melbourne today.
The first commitment period was signed and ratified by then-PM Kevin Rudd in 2007-08. The Kyoto Protocol Mark I sought to reduce global emissions by 5% compared to 1990 levels of greenhouse gases between 2008 and 2012.
The second commitment period will begin on 1 January 2013, although reduction targets have not been set and are to be negotiated in Doha in December.
