Yallourn latest coal plant to scale back production
Business Spectator, 17 October 2012
Energy Australia’s brown-coal generation asset Yallourn is the latest coal fired plant to reduce production due to higher costs and diminishing demand.
This follows the announcement by Stanwell Corporation last week that Tarong Power Station will switch off two generators with a combined capacity of 700MW during summer.
Located in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley, Yallourn will run at 75% capacity resulting in a production loss of around 370MW.
While large emissions-intensive generators are lamenting the effect of the RET and the Carbon Pricing Mechanism, carbon economists are heralding the closures as proof of the effectiveness of carbon policies.
