Lack of Gas Supply Force Buyers to go DIY on Energy
Source: Financial Review 9/1/17
Big gas consumers are looking at alternative energy options in response to the sharp increases in gas prices over the last few months. With a shortage in gas the big 3 retailers are competing with manufacturers and industrial buyers while attempting to maintain gas stockpiles at the Victorian Iona storage plant.
Buyers coming up to the end of gas contracts are faced with sharp price rises and limited choice available with only one retailer offering contracts for a period during the last quarter of 2016.
The lack of market choice has motivated some buyers to investigate on site energy production methods. Biogas and biomass, using waste to generate energy, is being explored by food manufacturers and the agricultural sector. Solar thermal is also emerging as a viable energy option for large buyers.
