Vic State Government triples brown coal royalty

Australia's emissions-intensive brown coal power plants look set to continue to undercut their black coal rivals after the trebling of brown coal royalties by the Victorian government, yet the cost increase is still likely to be felt by consumers, according to some experts.
Industry sources said the rise in royalties, confirmed in the Victorian budget on Wednesday, would push up costs for the brown coal plants in the Latrobe Valley, the country's most emissions-intensive generators, perhaps by $2 to $3 per megawatt-hour, not enough to overtake black coal plants in NSW, for example.
