South Australian business faces 100pc electricity price rise

South Australian irrigators said they faced electricity price increases of more than 100 per cent next year but South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill said the big price fluctuations wouldn't last long and the state would benefit from leading the adoption of wind and solar power.

Ahead of a crisis meeting of electricity prices in Adelaide, Energy Users Association of Australia chief executive Phil Barresi said politicians who set ambitious renewable energy targets must ensure there is secure and reliable supply of electricity, including by building additional interconnectors, which are high-voltage transmission cables connecting electricity markets.

"It's fine to talk about Europe and what's happening there with 100 per cent renewables in various European countries, but the biggest growth sector in Europe at the moment is the roll out of interconnectors from France into other European countries in order to ensure their energy security through the provision of nuclear power," Mr Barresi said.

"We are going to need short-term solutions as well as long-term solutions to what's happening in South Australia."
