Concerns over Tasmania's Hydro Electricity

There are concerns about Tasmania's hydro energy output after the driest October on record saw the state import more power from Victoria's brown coal plants.

With long-term projections for a drier southern Australia and less rainfall for Tasmania, energy experts are looking to other forms of renewable energy to reduce the reliance on hydro generation.

Hydro Tasmania's Gerard Flack said the dry October saw power being drawn from Basslink at almost full capacity.

"The cable was importing almost at capacity, so that's approximately one-third of Tasmania's demand being supplied across Basslink," he said.
