South Australia Power Troubles Deepen


Sub-station issues at the Victoria-South Australia interconnector resulted in widespread blackouts across South Australia on October 1. The unexpected interruption in supply to the South Australian grid caught backup generators off-guard.

The vulnerability of the South Australian grid to cope with extreme conditions has only been stretched further in recent times by both the closure of the Northern Power Station and intermittent supply from the Pelican Point generator.

The issues of electricity supply and affordability are becoming increasingly prominent in South Australia and is seeing wide-ranging opinions on the state's high renewables uptake, as well as ongoing discussions on the potential development of a South Australian Nuclear Energy development program.

For the time being, South Australia's electricity wholesale prices have increased over 70% since the beginning of this financial year.
