The first cargo of liquefied natural gas from Santos's $US18.5 billion GLNG venture in Queensland is scheduled to depart Gladstone on Friday morning, marking a major milestone as the state begins exports from a second gas project.

The Malaysian tanker Seri Bakti is listed on the Gladstone Ports Corporation website as due to depart around mid-morning Friday. An extra pilot will be on board due to the attendance of the Queensland Premier at the site, it noted.

Queensland's first export of LNG was made early this year from BG Group's $US20.4 billion Queensland Curtis project, also located on Curtis Island in Gladstone harbour. The start-up of exports from GLNG is due to be followed later this year by the third project, Origin Energy's $24.7 billion Australia Pacific LNG project. Once fully on-stream, the three projects, representing about $80 billion of investment, will make Queensland the world's fourth-largest LNG exporter.
