Queensland Network Merger Plans

The Queensland State Government has unveiled plans to merge the state-owned transmission and distribution businesses Ergon, Energex and Powerlink. The decision comes as the Queensland Government unveils its first budget since being elected in a landslide in 2014.
The driver for the merger is the Government's want to restructure debt repayments with the aim of reducing $600 million worth of interest costs. In addition to bringing together the three utilities, the Queensland Government hopes to increase focus on rooftop solar in the state.
This shift in perception of solar is a significant change from the opinion of the previous Liberal National Party Government and the state electricity network's points of view. Queensland is home to one-third of Australia's rooftop solar installations - the highest share in the country.
