Emissions Reduction Fund to include Lighting Projects

The Department of Environment has released its guidelines for lighting projects to be included in the Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF). This now means that projects that seek to reduce energy consumption for lighting commercial and industrial buildings, as well as public lighting will now be able to bid for funding under the ERF.

Projects that include modifying existing lighting equipment, installation of lighting control systems, and installing generating equipment that directly powers lighting will now all be allowed to participate in the ERF program.

The value - in terms of reduced emissions - is to be determined using the methodology outlined in the Department of Environment's Methodology Determination.

Whether or not commercial and industrial lighting projects will be able to compete with other measures - like the buy-back of deforrestation rights - remains to be seen, but it is a promising step in creating a more inclusive emissions reduction scheme.
