Think tank slams electricity privatisation

The Australia Institute report says that since Victoria privatised power in the 1990s, electricity prices have outpaced inflation, increasing by 170 per cent compared to a 60 per cent increase in the consumer price index.
A productivity slump in the electricity sector contributed to price hikes, said the report's author David Richardson.
Since June 1995, productivity in electricity, gas and water had declined by 24.9 per cent while all other Australian industries saw an increase of 33.6 per cent, he said in statement on Monday.
