EU in pivotal ballot over carbon market

A vote against propping up the European Union carbon market would be a setback felt around the world, the International Energy Agency warned on Monday as parliamentarians prepared for a potentially pivotal ballot on one of Europe’s flagship environmental policies.
Members of the European Parliament are due to vote on Tuesday on a plan to rescue the troubled market and Dr Fatih Birol, IEA chief economist, said it was “extremely important” that the measure passed.
“It is important not only for Europe, but also for the global fight against climate change,” he said in an interview with the Financial Times.
