Electricity consumption down in 2012

The conclusion of 2012 has see electricity consumption in the NEM continue its downward trend.

The Climate Spectator has reported that the trend began in 2008 and continues until the current time. 2012 saw a decrease of 2.5%, equivalent to 4,818 GWh on 2011 levels. This makes energy consumption in 2012 the lowest of the four years from 2008. The largest reduction was seen in NSW where a 5.2% reduction on 2011 figures was recorded.

Many things have been offered for this reduction including milder weather during summer and winter, the closure and scaling back of industry and the introduction of solar PV and energy efficiency strategies.
