AEMO advises “no gas supply shortage”
A domestic gas shortfall that was forecast late last year for 2018/19 has been avoided, thanks to the Government threatening to forcibly reduce export levels.
“There are no gas supply gaps forecast in 2019, or in the short term, under expected conditions” (AEMO) after a change in “international market dynamics, lower demand for generation, new pipeline interconnections and the Federal Government’s Australian Domestic Gas Supply Mechanism” which delivered an improved outlook for the East Coast gas markets.
Together with the current supply conditions on the east coast, LNG producers have advised they can provide up to 8 petajoules more than previously expected to the domestic market, and the combination of factors may be enough to stave off gas shortages until at least 2030.
